When the Keir Hardie Estate was built after World War Two, the turnings were named after Civil Defence Personnel who were killed in the War.
HAMMERSLEY AVENUE named after Fireman John Stanley Hammersley killed by enemy action 1940. MURRAY SQUARE named after Fireman Arthur Murray killed by enemy action 1940. The above were two of ten fireman killed at Gainsborough Road School by enemy action while on Duty on the night of 8th/9th December 1940 when the school suffered a direct hit by a High Explosive bomb. A memorial to their memory was unveiled at Gainsborough School in 2005 by Sir Robin Wales and Cyril Demarne OBE, Wartime Officer West Ham Fire Brigade (see Photo of the memorial). The others were Fireman Edward Badland, Alfred Cumberland, Frederick Dell (DELL CLOSE E.15), Albert Eyre, Frederick Gage (GAGE ROAD E.16), Stanley McEwin, Harold Marriot (MARRIOT ROAD E.15) and Walter Palmer. TANT AVENUE named after Frederick Arthur Tant ARP (Air Raid Precautions) Stretcher Bearer, injuried 20/4/41 and died of his injuries in St Mary's Hospital on the same day. ROGERS ROAD named after William `Bill` Rogers ARP Chief Warden, killed by enemy action (V1 Flying Bomb) at North Woolwich 26/7/44. TARLING ROAD named after Rev William Tarling ARP Warden killed by enemy action 1941. BRIDGELAND ROAD named after Leslie Bridgeland ARP Ambulance Driver killed by enemy action 1940. At Bridge Road Depot in September 2005, Sir Robin and Cyril also unveiled memorial to the Fireman and ARP members who were killed there in September 1940 by one of the first bombs to fall on the borough in the Blitz. One of these was Sub Officer Walter Turley NFS (National Fire Service), TURLEY CLOSE E.15 is named after him. Cyril sadly died earlier this year at the grand age of 102! RUSCOE ROAD named after William Ruscoe ARP, killed by enemy action.
APPLEBY ROAD named after John Whitehouse Appleby ARP, killed by enemy action. GILL AVENUE named after Arthur Gill ARP, killed by enemy action. MASON CLOSE named after Frank Mason ARP, killed by enemy action. MONK DRIVE named after Thomas Monk ARP, killed by enemy action. POLLARD CLOSE named after David Pollard ARP, killed by enemy action. These men were killed along with Arthur Edward ARP on the 19th April 1941 at Custom House School warden post 1Q, when the school suffered a direct hit. Their memorial is in the East London Cemetery in Grange Road. One turning is named after a Lady Air Raid Warden, Boreham Avenue is named after Mrs C Boreham, who was Post Warden.
