These two small lock-up shops in Albert Road date from 1899 and were typical of those built to meet the demands of workers' housing in the area as local industry expanded. Often built quickly and cheaply, these units already seem to be rather tired-looking. Before supermarkets and out-of-town shopping malls, this is where local people would have shopped. T. Avery was an ironmonger and rag merchant. Next door was a general grocer, the shop is adorned with adverts for a variety of soft drinks. The large advertisement is for Colman's Bull's Head mustard. Above Avery's is a bill board announcing acts at the Royal Albert Music Hall (see Albert Cinema on the website).
The doughty workmen pausing by their hut for this photo opportunity appear to be digging up the road to lay or replace sewerage pipes. WLBH on the hut suggests West Ham Local Board of Health - who would have been responsible for this type of work before borough councils came into being.
