This tablet records the fact that a school was erected in 1861 in memory of Sir John Pelly, Bt.  Sir John was lord of the Manor of Upton, a great benefactor to the community and also active in a range of local matters. Various local people subscribed to a fund to build the school and their names and inscribed on the tablet.
