Martin Street, Stratford - 1

This view of Martin Street, Stratford shows part of "High Meads" a house that was the former residence of Mr F S Martin, lord of the Manor of Chobham.

The house is largely hidden by the many small lock-up shops that were common in the area. Note the ubiquitous policeman at the corner and the ever-present road works.

High Meads was an area of Stratford marsh which comprised 382 acres beside River Lea, north of Bow Bridge. The area it was brought under the court of sewers in 1601 and was still identifiable in a map drawn up in 1851 for the Commissioners of Sewers.

The manor of Chobhams was formed in 1329. In 1343 it was bought by Thomas de Chobham, from whom it took its name. Chobham Road, Stratford takes its name from the manor and farm.
