North Woolwich looking South (1)

This Photo looking across the Albert Road and The Royal Victoria Park, shows the jetty and tall funnels of old steam ferries by the foot tunnel entrance to Woolwich. In 1963 two new diesel ferries 'John Burns' and 'Ernest Bevin' replaced the steamers 'Squires' and 'Duncan' and the following year 'John Benn' and 'Will Crooks' were replaced by 'James Newman'. The three diesel ferries did the work of the four paddle boats but did not give the pleasure of viewing the working steam engine boilers being stoked. You can also see the police station on the corner of Pier Road, the old station and The Royal Pavilion Public House by the river. If you look across the river, the tower block on the right is still under construction. You can see the open spaces that were yet to be redeveloped after WWII.
