This sculptured figure symbolising youth making a gesture of welcome and friendship is positioned above the entrance to Kensington Youth Club. It is the work of sculptor Peter Peri. The Youth Centre was opened by East Ham Council on Monday 14th September, 1964. Originally opened in Kensington School in November 1942, in January 1947 it moved to temporary hutments in Wordsworth Avenue. The new permanent building was of "open plan" design with the central space from ground to ceiling and with the gallery all-round on the first floor. It contained a coffee bar, snug and central social space for activities involving large groups. The first floor had a billiards room, a powder room and a girls' sitting room. In addition to the social side, provision was also made for other activities such as practical work and drama on the ground floor and, on the first floor, there was space for physical activities with changing room and showers, a music room, a committee room and a quiet room.
