An 1898 advertisement for Elliott & Sons, dairyman of Stratford. The wording probably alludes to the large number of German and Italians in the grocery trades at that time. The tone has a familiar contemporary resonance in regard to the use of foreign labour.

Selection packs of Christmas greetings cards are a familiar sight in shops and are often sold by charities. They are nothing new - these were on sale over one hundred years ago. This envelope was produced by local printers Ward, Whiteway & Co., of Woodgrange Road, Forest Gate for his assortment.

Design Sketch
This finely-drawn sketch in coloured inks (measuring 3 x 5 inches - 12.5 x 8 cms) was done by Charles H. Ward, an apprentice printer and artistic compositor of south-east London, who eventually set up a business in Woodgrange Road, Forest Gate.
