Dock Road c1900

This view, looking northwards, shows Dock Road at the junction of Tidal Basin Road. The Stratford to North Woolwich railway line and the perimeter wall of the Thames Iron Works are to the left. The Clarendon Hotel which dates back to 1867 can be seen to the right of the photo.

The road traffic is waiting at the 'White Gates' level crossing of the branch line to Tidal Basin and beyond.  On the far side of the level crossing at 106 Victoria Dock Road is The Duke of Cambridge public house on the corner of Hoy Street, it opened in 1871, the building still exists (in 2010) but is no longer a pub and looks very run down.

There were shops all along this part of Victoria Dock Road which in those days extended right up to the Barking Road. Next to the Duke of Cambridge at No.105 is the Welcome Coffee and Chop House owned by William Lewis; at No.104 Henry Ubele butcher; at103 Mrs Mary Ann Hewitt corn chandler; at 102 Ernest Butler tobacconist; at 101 James Maloney fishmonger.
