J. Keir Hardie

Presentation and Unveiling of a Bust of J. Keir Hardie took place at West Ham Town Hall, Stratford, on 20th January 1948. An eight-page pamphlet, admission ticket  and invitation card.


The original bust was by Benno Schotz, R.S.A and the presentation bust was one of four replicas in bronze. The bust was presented by Miss Margaret Bondfield, C.H., J.P., LL.D. and Bob Edwards (Chairman of the Independent Labour Party) on behalf of the Keir Hardie Memorial Committee and the I. L. P. Accepting the bust on behlf of the People of West Ham were: Alderman P. Hearn, J.P., Ald. F.A. Warner, J.P. and Ald. G.J. Stokes, J.P. with other members of the Corporation in attendance.


Originally on display at West Ham Town Hall, the bust later went to Canning Town Library for many years and has recently been put on display again at the (Old) Town Hall.


The  acceptance card is signed by F. Elwyn Jones, who himself later became a West Ham MP and was sometime Lord Chancellor.
